Powder Coating Care & Maintenance

A powder coat finish is extremely durable but regular maintenance is still needed in order to maximise the life of the product.

Some of factors that can impact the life of the powder coating include:

  • UV light.
  • Atmospheric pollution such as salt, dirt and grime that can accumulate over time.
  • Air-borne debris—such as sand—that can cause erosion.

Frequency of cleaning

How often you clean your powder-coated products will vary depending on location, environment, levels of atmospheric pollution (such as salt) and exposure to wind and airborne debris (such as sand).

It is important

  • In dry inland areas and interior environments with only minor condensation, cleaning should be done at least every 12 months.
  • In areas where the atmosphere is deemed nonhazardous e.g. rural or 'normal' urban environments, cleaning should be increased to at least every six months.
  • If you live in a humid, tropical environment, a very high industrial area, a marine environment cleaning should be done at least every three months.

How to clean your powder coating

A cleaning routine should start at the time the products are installed, to make sure any construction material—such as concrete, plaster and paint—is removed before it can dry.

To clean your powder coating follow these steps:

  • Wash with a non-abrasive soft brush and a mild pH neutral detergent in warm water to remove salt, dust or other deposits.
  • If you have stubborn stains you can clean using recommended solvents on the affected area only. Recommended solvents include Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or methylated spirits. Do not use aggressive solvents.
  • Rinse the surfaces thoroughly with clean fresh water.

Tips for cleaning and protecting your powder coating

  • Check your powder coated products regularly and clean more often if required.
  • Clean when the surface temperatures are below 25 degrees Celsius.
  • Do not use turpentine, thinners or other aggressive solvents.
  • Do not scrub or rub excessively.
